Chih Nan Temple
Nicknamed "Temple of a Thousand Steps," this temple, perched high on th slopes of Monkey Mountain, offers fine views of Taipei Basin, and interesting traditional worship. Near the zoo in the suburb of Mucha, Half-an-hour from Taipei. City buses : 236, 237. Chihnan bus : 1, 2.

Taipei City Zoo
Taipei's huge new zoo, in the rolling hills of suburban Mucha, is one of the largest in Asia and is comparable to San Diego's world-famous zoo. Animals from around the world live in humane "natural" habitats with relative freedom of movement behind low walls or deep ditches. Cages are employed only for agile, ferocious, or flighty residents. Open 9 to 5 daily. Buses : 236, 258, 282, 291; Culture Buses : 11, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25.

Yangmingshan National Park
This massive mountainous park on the outskirts of Taipei has waterfalls, volcanic craters, hot springs, and abundant wildlife. Cherry and azalea blossoms in spring and cool, fresh air in summer are added attractions. Hiking trails, picnic and recreation facilities available. Buses : 230, 260.

Kuantu Nature Park
The Kuantu Marsh, just northwest of Taipei, is a favorite rest of Asia's migratoty birds. Located where the Keelung and tamsui rivers meet; the best time for bird watching is at low tide. Observation stations have been set up along the perimeter of the bird sanctuary to facilitate bird watching. Buses : 223, 302, Chihnan 2, Chihnan 5.

Yingko
The tiny town of Yingko is Taiwan's pottery center. Scores of shops offer an endless variety of porcelain, from simple earth enware tea sets to delicate, hand-painted replicas of Ming and Ching dynasty vases. Some factories offer free tours. Yingko is 30 minutes to an hour southwest of Taipei by car, bus, or train. An easy half-or full-day trip.

Wulai
Wulai is an aborigine enclave where visitors can witness the traditional dances and ceremonies of Taiwan's Atayal tribe or enjoy the beautiful waterfall cascading through lush vegetation. About an hour's drive south of Taipei.

Tamsui
An ancient fort, fresh seafood, reasonably priced antiques, and beautiful sunsets make the quaint seaside town of Tamsui a popular day trip from Taipei.

Yehliu
The rock formations at Yehliu (Wild Willows) are an amazing array of artistic shapes created by erosion and other natural forces. Restaurants, dolphin and seal shows, snack and souvenir vendors. On the coast west of Keelung, an hour's drive from Taipei.

Keelung
The landmark 74-foot (23-meter) white statue of Kuanyin, Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, crowns a hilltop park overlooking the harbor. Windows inside the hollow statue offer interesting views. Taiwanese snacks and desserts make Miaokou (Temple Mouth) Keelung's most popular dining spot. Keelung is a 40-minute drive northeast of Taipei.

Northeast Coast National Scenic Area
This national Scenic Area is noted for its natural beauty : reefs, rivers, terraced tice paddies, rolling green hills, lighthouses, and two of Taiwan's best beaches. Recreation includes camping, rock climbing, hiking along a 200-year-old footpath, and water sports. Information centers at Fulung and Yenliao beaches. Convenient by bus or train; just southeast of Keelung.

Chiufen
Located up in the hills of northeast Taiwan, Chiufen was referred to as the "gold capital of Asia" in the 1930s. With the aura of an old mining town still apparent, Chiufen once again began to receive wide spread attention. One and half hour's drive from Taipei.

Sanhsia
The main attraction in the bustling old town of Sanhsia, a short distance from Yingko, is a temple which was originally built in 1770. The temple is known for its intricately carved stone and bronze columns and statues, carved stone lions, camphor wood carvings, and exquisite bronze bas-reliefs. A tour of the temple takes an hour or two.

Window on China
An hour south of Taipei, you can tour China's Great Wall and Peking's Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven all in one stop. The places is Window on China, which has 90 perfect mainature reproductions of the best known structures in both Taiwan and mainland China. Window on China also has a classical Chinese garden, restaurants, snack bars, a tea house, and souvenir shops.
